The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences organized a scientific workshop titled “Giardia Lamblia Infection and Its Impact on Physical Health and Sports Activity,” which was presented by Assistant Lecturer Zahida Hatif Mahdi.
The workshop addressed the definition of Giardia Lamblia, a protozoan parasite that affects the digestive system, particularly residing in the duodenum and small intestine. The infection is transmitted through contaminated food or water. The session reviewed the different stages of the disease (cystic stage and trophozoite stage) and their effects on human health.
The main symptoms of the infection were also highlighted, such as chronic diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weight loss, and the negative impact these have on the physical performance of athletes. The workshop emphasized the importance of prevention by improving the quality of food and water and raising health awareness among athletes to avoid complications.
The workshop received a great deal of engagement from the participants, who underscored the importance of integrating health aspects into sports curricula to ensure the maintenance of physical fitness and the ability to continue athletic activities effectively.
