The Psychological Counseling Unit at the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, in cooperation with the College’s Continuing Education Division, held a workshop entitled “Social Stigma – and Methods of Treating It.” Professor Dr. Hussein Abdel-Zahra Abdel-Yama and Dr. Haider Ali Muhammad lectured at the workshop, where they provided a comprehensive explanation of the concept of social stigma and its negative impact on individuals and society.

The workshop addressed the concept of social stigma as a pathological condition that leads to the isolation of individuals from society due to feelings of inferiority and discrimination linked to a certain status or personal or social circumstances. The importance of the role of youth in confronting this phenomenon was pointed out, as they are an essential part of society and able to participate effectively in building it.

The workshop aimed to reduce discrimination against individuals suffering from social stigma, enhance their treatment as normal persons, encourage social interaction and their participation in life activities, for their positive role in society, pay attention to health care, conduct periodic examinations for those affected, work to treat them in a way that suits their condition, provide positive support, and avoid making them feel negative feelings. And enhancing self-esteem and self-confidence in individuals affected by social stigma.

This workshop comes as part of the college’s ongoing efforts to spread awareness and promote mental health to contribute to building an integrated and harmonious society.
